ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Commerce has been dedicated to academic excellence since its establishment in the year 1981-82 with 128 seats in BCom (Pass). In the year 2018-19, the department became a full-fledged department with 256 honors in Accountancy. Through innovative teaching methods and a dynamic learning environment, the department has consistently nurtured students, preparing them for evolving economic landscapes.

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT: To be a globally recognized center of excellence in commerce education, fostering future leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals through innovative teaching, research, and industry collaboration. The department aims to develop ethically responsible individuals with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, equipping them to contribute meaningfully to economic development and societal progress in an ever-evolving business land.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT: • To provide high-quality education in commerce, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications to prepare students for dynamic business environments. • To foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and ethical leadership through innovative teaching and research. • To encourage entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and industry-academia collaboration for holistic professional development. • To equip students with global competencies, enabling them to contribute effectively to economic and societal progress. • To promote lifelong learning and adaptability, ensuring graduates remain competitive in an evolving business landscape.

SWOC ANALYSIS OF THE DEPARTMENT:

STRENGTH: • The department boasts highly qualified & dedicated teaching faculty who maintain high academic standards. • Good teacher-student relationship. • Strict discipline. • Effective library support (well-stocked library for students and teachers). • Good inter-personal relationships. • Very energetic department with active participation of students in various college activities like cultural events, NSS, NCC, sports, and college competitions. • Teachers have held & currently hold important administrative posts in the college – accounts, examinations, IQAC, etc.

WEAKNESSES: • Lack of infrastructure in college. • The departmental seminar library needs to be extended. • Inadequate e-resources and advanced equipment. • The department needs funds from UGC for the upgradation of the computer lab. • Faculty inadequacy. • Quality of students is not satisfactory. • Inadequate built-in space in the department.

OPPORTUNITIES: • Being centrally located in the heart of the capital city of Odisha, our college caters to the needs of economically weak students, particularly girls located within a 20 km radius. • Students and faculties are encouraged to upgrade their skills through online learning platforms. • A strong alumni presence provides support to the department.

CONSTRAINTS/CHALLENGES: • Steady internet connectivity for teaching purposes to supplement lectures by using the World Wide Web. • Limited freedom in deploying innovative teaching methods due to syllabus and time constraints.
