ABOUT:
The Department of Odia is one of the leading UG departments of Ekamra Degree College and has a glorious heritage. Its inception dates back to the foundation year of the college, i.e., 1978. Teaching, learning, and the extension of Odia language and literature are the basic objectives of the department. The long history records production of a good number of Odia scholars who have become lecturers, teachers, media persons, writers, editors, and other professionals. The department has 32 seats in Core/Honours subjects and around 650 seats in AECC & GE subjects. Presently, it is run by 4 faculty members — two regular lecturers and two guest faculties. As per the newly introduced CBCS course curriculum, the syllabus has covered Linguistics, Literature, Folk Literature, Creative Writing, Translation, Communicative Odia, Mass Media, and Functional Odia Grammar, etc.
Organization of seminars, conduct of literary competitions, observance of important days, welcome and farewell programs, Ganesh Puja, Saraswati Puja, annual day celebrations, publication of articles, and wall magazine 'ANWESHA', etc. are some of the major co-curricular activities undertaken during every academic year. Further, the department felicitates the best Odia graduate each year. The students are provided with a rich seminar library, reference and journal section, computer point, Wi-Fi support, question bank, etc. The department believes in innovative and creative events for students.
Curricular Activities
1. Seminar paper presentations are held on the 4th Saturday of every month in the Odia department.
2. Apart from regular classes, surprise examinations are periodically held.
3. Group discussions and interactive sessions are organized.
4. Mentorship is provided to students of all semesters of UG courses regarding various career options such as preparation for CPET, NET, and other competitive exams.
5. Essay writing, quiz competitions, debates, and extempore competitions are organized.
Achievements
1. Successful conduction of Biswa Odia Bhasha Sammilani, an initiative by the Government of Odisha, by the Odia department.
2. More than 600 students from all streams participated in events such as Nua O Sahitya Pratijogita.
