VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The department seeks to equip students with a sound academic foundation that will help them to question critically, think logically and communicate clearly, act resourcefully and live ethically. Our graduate programme further aims to develop thinkers, leaders and innovators whose subsequent efforts will benefit the human social world and life on the part. We bring theoretical and methodological rigor to understand complex social and cultural realities both local andglobal. We promote ways of imagining and re-imagining the common good and encourage the use of knowledge and skills to realize a more just society. The department is dedicated towards creating competent and socially sensitive graduates through rigorous teaching/training programmes and extension activities.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Sociology provides a rigorous and academically challenging program of study that allows its students to develop intellectually, socially, and professionally and to offer students sociological tools and insights they can use to address complex issues and problems encountered in social institutions and organizational settings. The department works for the better academic output of the under developed and needy students from the rural background. The Sociology department is committed to educating the students about the realities of human social interaction. Because human social life is fraught with inequalities and oppression, we train our students to think critically. Because our students are educated to be active, critical thinkers, they become responsive members of their community. As Sociology is a highly career oriented subject, students prefer to take admission in Sociology to get into higher professional courses like Master in Social Work (MSW), Rural Management and Rural Development to get better opportunity in public and private sector.

TEACHING LEARNING PROCESS

The curriculum lays emphasis on the teaching and learning of general concerns of Sociology as well as the issues of sociological significance in Odisha which constitutes a special focus of the teaching of the department. A combination of participatory, experiential and creative pedagogy is used for transacting the curriculum with a view to fostering dialogue, mutual learning and critical reflection. The pedagogical practices also utilize an inter-disciplinary framework combining classical approaches in conjunction with emerging areas of research. The students pursuing their graduation degree in the department not only have to learn critical approaches and perspectives in the classroom but are also encouraged to participate in short field visits during vacations as part of their mandatory research projects. The department also takes care to expose the students to the prevailing social realities through activities such as, field visit, seminars and other programmes in collaboration with other social organizations and other departments. The faculty members of the department have a wide range of interests and expertise and are currently engaged in research in areas such as Migration, Social Movements, Tribal research, Urban and Rural studies etc.
